What got me started in this style?

I've always loved to look at the tribal designs for tattoos. How I really got into this style was when my dad asked me to draw a tribal style Crane taking flight for him. I did and then a little while later he asked me to draw a black tribal swan for him on a note book. While practicing the pose and style I also experimented and loved the result and this is how I started making full finished pieces in this style.
